CREATING WHAT’S NEXT-
By Valerie Ramsey with Heather Hummel
Author, model, speaker Valerie Ramsey has just given us her second book, Creating What’s Next – Gracefully, written with Heather Hummel, and featuring a foreword by actress Ali MacGraw, star of Love Story, Goodbye Columbus, and The Getaway, among many others.
Using her first book, Gracefully – Looking and Being Your Best at Any Age, as a jumping off point, Valerie’s newest book asks the question, “What do you do when you reach middle age and all of a sudden you find yourself wondering, ‘What’s Next?’” Valerie Ramsey experienced this in her own life, and quickly discovered that she was not alone. It was clear that we all face transitions of one sort or another – the children are grown and the proverbial nest is empty, a career that once fulfilled and excited us has lost its appeal or we are forced to find a new job, a relationship has ended and we’re feeling ungrounded and lost. Perhaps we’ve relocated to a new part of the country or even outside of the U.S. and must forge a new beginning. For whatever reason, we’re trying to figure out “What’s Next? Where do I go from here, and how do I get there?”
In Part 1, Valerie revisits and updates the latest information gathered from her professional resources on what has worked for her in the fields of:
• Reducing stress
In Part 2, in the warm and conversational manner in which she wrote her first book, Valerie answers the questions so many of us have asked ourselves. Based on the wisdom gained from her own life experiences, Valerie takes you behind the scenes with entertaining stories as she answers questions such as:
• How do I figure out What’s Next?
• What do I do if a great opportunity drops in my lap but I haven’t got the confidence to go after it? Or the knowledge? Or the experience?
• What do I do if just as I am launching my great new What’s Next, a serious challenge threatens to end my dream before it’s even begun?
• How do I find the confidence I need to get through an event that has me nervous and full of butterflies?
• What are the most important things I can do to move forward?
• How can I manage to balance part-time or freelance work with a full time job?
• What are the first steps I should take if I’m interested in modeling?
• How can I get over my fear of public speaking – and actually learn to enjoy it?
Believing that in order to create your best What’s Next, you must also be your healthiest, strongest, most confident best self in Body, Mind & Spirit, key points are emphasized and updated from Gracefully with contributions from sleep authority, Dr Michael Breus, PhD; Integrative and Holistic Nutritionist, Derek Johnson; Sexuality expert Lou Paget, AASECT; and Bruce Berman, M.D. integrative medical doctor specializing in Healthy Aging.
Using examples from her own life and the lessons that she learned along the way, Valerie shares her secrets for overcoming challenges and winning in the second half of life – and tells you how you can too.
Valerie is a firm believer in the inherent power and strength of women, and that we are uniquely suited to lead, to inspire, and to do great things –no matter what our age. She has lived her life in direct contrast to most people by transitioning from being a stay-at-home mother (she and her husband are the parents of six) in her twenties and thirties, to a public relations career with the famed Pebble Beach Resorts in her fifties, adding a modeling career to her already busy schedule in her sixties, and later becoming a published author and speaker on the national speakers circuit.
When she was fifty-three, Valerie and her husband, Wally, moved from Greenwich, Connecticut to the Monterey Peninsula in California. With the children grown, she knew that she wanted to have a career of her own, and she went to work for Pebble Beach Resorts, working her way up from an entry-level position to becoming the public relations & media director. It wasn’t always easy for Valerie. No sooner had she achieved her dream job than she was simultaneously diagnosed with both cancer and heart disease. This proved to be a major turning point in her life. Faced with the choice to give up and go home, or to persevere and overcome this setback, she chose the latter, dealt with her adversities, and resumed her position at Pebble Beach, a tenure that lasted for fifteen years.
It was during this time that she was discovered by a Hollywood producer and was subsequently recruited by a San Francisco modeling agency and later, Wilhelmina Models. At age sixty-three a second career was born, although she did not give up her public relations position. Instead, she fit in the castings and modeling bookings as time permitted.
Valerie has said a resounding “Yes!” to new ideas, new adventures and new experiences, and the rewards have been extraordinary. Now 73, Valerie has recently relocated to the east coast of Florida where she has taken on many new ventures. In addition to her modeling assignments, she keynotes for the American Heart Assoc. and numerous other organizations.
